“Antioch Theatre Celebrates 100 Years of Community and Cinema

The Antioch Theatre, a longstanding symbol of community and entertainment in downtown Antioch, recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Since its opening on July 26, 1924, the theater has weathered numerous changes, from the advent of digital technology to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, all while maintaining its position as the longest-continuously operating business in the town under the same name and at the same location. This milestone highlights the enduring significance of local theaters in fostering a sense of community and nostalgia, even in a rapidly changing media landscape.

Michael Sheedy, who purchased the theater in December 2022, has carried forward this legacy by offering free weekly showings since the anniversary date and continuing through October 5. The screenings, which span 10 decades of films, reflect the theater’s rich history and its connection to the community. Showings have included period-appropriate commercials, cartoons, and tributes, transporting patrons back in time and offering a unique cinematic experience rarely found in today’s multiplexes.

The Antioch Theatre’s story is a testament to resilience and community support. Previous owner Tim Downey was pivotal in reviving the theater after its closure in 2014 due to maintenance issues and deteriorating conditions. Through a community-backed campaign and a $750,000 renovation, Downey transformed the space, introducing a boutique theater with a second screen, new digital projection, and a revitalized marquee. These updates preserved the theater’s charm while modernizing its offerings, making it a continued source of pride for residents.

The theater’s unique appeal lies in its history and its ability to adapt. Unlike grand movie palaces, the Antioch Theatre is a simple, two-story structure that has been a community fixture for generations. The theater has evolved from its original 400-seat capacity with an added balcony to its modern 165 main floor and 55 balcony seats while retaining its nostalgic essence. The boutique space offers additional versatility, creating an intimate viewing experience for patrons.

Sheedy’s dedication to preserving and enhancing the theater experience has made the Antioch Theatre more than just a place to watch movies; it is a gathering spot that draws over 25,000 visitors downtown each year. According to Barbara Porch, executive director of the Antioch Chamber of Commerce, the theater remains a cherished part of Antioch’s downtown experience, offering families the opportunity to create lasting memories.

This enduring connection to the community is further supported by a village-approved $1.50 per ticket tax, rebated to Sheedy through 2032. This partnership reflects the community’s commitment to keeping the theater alive and thriving despite industry challenges.

Sheedy, who balances his role as theater owner with his career in public safety, has embraced the complexities of the movie industry while striving to bring first-run films to Antioch. His approach preserves the theater’s legacy and keeps it relevant in a changing entertainment landscape. The addition of movie memorabilia and the transition to digital delivery are subtle updates that enhance the experience without compromising the theater’s historic charm.

The Antioch Theatre’s journey over the past century is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the enduring power of community support. As it enters its next chapter, it remains a beloved symbol of “old-school downtown USA,” bringing families and friends together to share in the joy of cinema, both new and nostalgic.
